Easing into the New Year with Simple Self Care

Gentle Self-Care Practices for a Healthier You

As the calendar flips over to a fresh, new year, it’s natural to feel the pull towards making ambitious resolutions and big life changes. We are conditioned to think that this is what we have to do as the year counts down.

I am not one for New Year resolutions, but I do like to set some guidelines and intentions. The way this looks, is;

* I usually sit down on New Years Eve, and write out goals for my small business, and what I would love to achieve on a personal level

* I reflect on the year and see what it has taught me, and what lessons I need to carry forward

* I look at what I may need to change, to help the happiest and healthiest version of me thrive

* I reflect on whether I would be happy with how I have treated me this last year, if I was my best friend/loved one

But, what if we do things a little differently this New Year?  What if this year, instead of rushing into a whirlwind of goals and plans, we chose to ease into the New Year gently and with intention? By prioritising simple daily self-care practices, we can set a foundation for sustained well-being and cultivate a life of balance. This should be the aim in all areas of our life right? Balance and happiness.

I thought I would put together a list of 10 very simple ways to incorporate self-care into your daily routine and make the most of the New Year with grace and ease. No special equipment needed. No sitting on the side of a mountain chanting, (although if you fancy that, go for it) Just simple self care that I hope, will afford yourself a little self kindness:

1. Start Your Day with Mindful Breathing

I have practised daily meditation for over 25 years. But, you don't need to sit in the lotus position, chanting for hours to meditate. Even breathing with intention is a form of meditation. So, before you reach for your phone or jump into your to-do list, take five deep, intentional breaths. This simple practice helps ground you in the present moment and sets a calm tone for the day ahead. You can even pair this with lighting a calming candle to create a serene morning ritual, and start your day right. Oh and if you're wondering, I created our Nerola candle to accompany my own meditation practise.

2. Create a "Me-Time" Corner

Designate a small, cosy space in your home where you can retreat for a few moments of quiet. Whether it’s a chair by the window, a cushion in your bedroom, or a favourite nook, use this space to unwind, meditate, or journal each day. It does not have to be an entire separate room. Just somewhere that you can go, and your mind recognises that it is time for a little pause in your day. My end of the day bath is my place to rest and restore, so choose somewhere that makes your simple moments of self care feel easy.

3. Hydrate with Intention

Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning to rehydrate your body after sleep. Add a slice of lemon, grated ginger or a sprig of mint to make it feel like an indulgence. Staying hydrated throughout the day is one of the simplest ways to nourish your body.

Top tip - I make a jug of lemon and ginger tonic, that I can have a "shot" of each morning. Simply boil a pint of water with a lemon cut in slices, some grated ginger and a dash of turmeric if you have some. Let it simmer for a few moments, then allow to cool completely. I then push the lemon slices with the back of a spoon to really release the juice. Pour the liquid through a strainer to remove the pulp etc, and store in the fridge. It will last about 5 days.

4. Set a "Technology-Free" Hour

Carve out an hour each day where you step away from screens. Use this time to connect with yourself or loved ones, read a book, enjoy a hobby, or simply rest. This small act can help reduce stress and improve focus. I would especially encourage this screen free time first thing in the morning, or an hour before bed time. Re-ignite your love of reading. It is a far more gentle way to ease into, or close down your day.

5. Practice Gratitude Daily

A well known one, but it is always mentioned for a reason - it works! At the end or start of each day, write down three things you’re grateful for. Focusing on the positive moments, no matter how small, can shift your mindset and enhance your sense of well-being. Cultivating an "attitude for gratitude" is an amazing act of sef care.

6. Nurture Your Body with Movement (ideally in nature)

Find a form of movement that brings you joy. It could be a gentle yoga session, a brisk walk in the woods, dancing to your favourite music, or stretching before bed. Moving your body releases endorphins and helps you stay connected to your physical self. If you can get outside in the fresh air to do it, even better. There is scientific proof that being amongst the trees calms our mind and soothes our nervous system. Go hug those trees!

7. Unwind with a Candlelit Ritual

Of course, I had to bring the magic of aromatherapy candles into this self care guide. Incorporate Whist wellness candles into your self-care routine to create a calming atmosphere. Whether it’s during a bath, while reading, or meditating, the soft glow and calming scents can help you relax and recenter. I explained all about how essential oils can have a great positive affect on your wellbeing, in this blog post, Why Essential Oils

8. Say "No" with Confidence

This was a huge teaching for me a few years ago, and something that I stand by. I will not pretend that I do it 100% of the time, but I have certainly got so much better at it. Protect your energy by learning to say no to commitments that don’t align with your priorities or values. Giving yourself permission to set boundaries is a powerful act of self-care. If you too are a small business owner, this is invaluable. Despite what society tells us, we do not have to be contactable and "on duty" 24 hours a day.

9. Prioritise Sleep Hygiene

Create a bedtime routine that encourages restful sleep. This might include dimming the lights, having a warm bath, avoiding screens an hour before bed, or using a relaxing scent like lavender in your bedroom. Try to avoid watching TV in your bedroom. Teach your mind that it is a place of rest and restoration.

10. Celebrate Small Wins

Acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small. You could even remind yourself of the small wins when you write your things you are grateful for that we spoke about. These small wins can be anything - Did you drink enough water today? Did you nourish your body with healthy food. Did you complete your to-do list? Take a moment to reflect and give yourself a little credit. These small victories are steps towards a healthier, happier you, and reminds you that actually, you are doing ok x

So my friends, as we step into this New Year, let’s remind ourselves that self-care isn’t about extravagant gestures or rigid schedules. It’s about tuning into our needs, honouring our well-being, and embracing simple, nurturing habits that help us thrive. Start small, stay consistent, and let your self-care practices be a loving gift to yourself every day.

Here’s to a gentle, intentional, and beautifully cared-for New Year.
