Creating a cosy reading nook

How to Create the Perfect Cosy Reading Nook

Is there anything better than curling up with a good book on a cosy night in? The slow change of the seasons, as Summer fades into Autumn, always leads me back to my love of books. I have a passion for reading. It is very rare that I do not have a a partially read book near me. During the pandemic, I created a cosy reading nook in my home and it elevated my reading experience no end, (candles were of course part of the scenery) - and it was so simple to do.

If you too are a lover of warm, inviting spaces, and getting lost in the pages of your favourite read, why not create your own cosy reading area. Whether you live in a compact des-res or have a spacious home, setting up your personal reading sanctuary is easier than you think. Here’s how to turn any corner into a perfect reading nook for reading and relaxation.

Tips for your own cosy reading nook

1. Choose the Right Location

Start by finding the perfect spot in your home. It could be a sunny window seat, a quiet corner, or even a repurposed closet. Mine is in the corner of my bedroom. What matters most is that it feels private and peaceful. Ideally, you want a space where you can escape into your book without distractions.

Tip: A spot with natural light during the day and a soft, warm lamp for evenings will set the mood perfectly.

2. Comfortable Seating is Key in your reading nook

Your book nook should invite you to sink into comfort for hours at a time. A plush armchair, a soft floor cushion, or even a beanbag can work wonders. Add extra layers of comfort with throw blankets and pillows in soft, cosy fabrics. My Mum made me a gorgeous patchwork comforter that I snuggle under

Tip: Think about fabrics like vintage linen, fleece, or knitted textures for that ultimate snug feeling.

3. Layer with Soft Lighting

Lighting can make or break the ambiance. Obviously, relaxing scented candles are a given, but maybe not enough light to read by. So opt for warm, soft lighting instead of harsh, bright bulbs. A beautiful table lamp, fairy lights, or even a calming salt lamp can add a gentle glow. Lighting should be functional but atmospheric, creating a calm space for reading.

Tip: Place your lamp behind or beside your seating area for perfect reading light without glare.

4. Surround Yourself with Books

No reading nook is complete without shelves or baskets full of books within arm's reach! Floating shelves can be a great space-saving solution, or if you want to embrace a more rustic vibe, wooden crates or woven baskets can be stylish and functional. I have 6 floating shelves packed full of books in my lounge. But in my little reading nook, I have a an old lamp table, (a charity shop find), and an old Fortnum and Mason hamper basket packed full of my top be reads.

Tip: If you are going for the shelving option, Organise your books by genre, colour, or mood for a personal touch.Or, if you have a neutral colour scheme in your home, put the spines towards the wall.

5. Add Personal Touches

Make your reading nook fit with you and your personality. Add artwork, framed quotes, or a plant or two for some natural calm. Scented candles or an essential oil diffuser can elevate the cosiness by filling the space with your favourite calming scents—my reading nook candles of choice are Nerola, After The Rain or Be Balanced.

Tip: If you are reading in the night, a clip on book light can be a great option

6. Keep a Small Table Nearby

If you have the room in your reading nook, a side table or a small tray nearby is a must for keeping your tea or coffee close by. My choice would always be tea, (Harmony Blend tea by Nuralei is my evening brew of choice).  Your little table can also be used it to pop your bookmarks, reading glasses, scented candle or even a notepad for jotting down notes or favourite quotes from your books.

Tip: Add a vintage-style side table seems to enhance the aesthetic and cosiness of your nook.It can be as worn and well loved as you like.

7. Incorporate Texture and Layers

Nothing says cosy like layered textures. Mix and match different fabrics and materials for a rich, inviting space. Don't worry about everything matching. It all adds to the cosy vibe of your reading nook. Think about combining plush rugs, knitted throws, and velvet cushions. Layering textures adds warmth and visual interest, making your nook irresistible.

Tip: A fluffy rug underneath your feet can add an extra layer of comfort and feels so good.
